Wannsee

To the beach!

Wannsee spells Water Fun with a capital W, especially in the summer. Up to 50,000 guests per day enjoy the popular lido, making Strandbad Wannsee Europe’s largest lake resort. Wicker beach chairs, beach volleyball and rowing boats or canoe rentals provide fun for everyone. Those who want to try something new can have a go at paddleboarding - surfboards and lessons are available at Stand Up Wannsee. If the lido is too full for you, you can swim in the smaller lakes such as the small Wannsee or Nikolassee.

Tips for your short trip to Wannsee

Boat tours of Wannsee are very popular. The boats sail over Großen Wannsee and also show you the many adjoining lakes in the direction of Potsdam. For short distances, simply take the ferry to Kladow, which passes the lido and the island of Schwanenwerder. The unusual Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) is a gem. It can only be reached from the woodlands at Wannsee and is a joy to behold for its numerous flowering garden plants and buildings from the Prussian period, and above all for its many curious peacocks. You can explore the island on foot. If you are interested in history, you should definitely visit the house of the Wannsee Conference. It was here in 1942 that high-ranking officials of the SS and the NSDAP met to plan the deportation and extermination of European Jews. Today, the house serves as a memorial. The Liebermann villa, with its works by the German impressionist Max Liebermann, is also worthwhile. In terms of cuisine, Wannsee offers something for every taste bud - whether barbecuing on a boat on the lake, pork knuckle or farm duck in a beer garden, or numerous coffee specialities from the Berlin roastery in the Kultur Park Cafe Kladow.

Driving from Berlin to Wannsee and parking facilities

It’s around 25 km to Wannsee by car. Depending on the route and departure time, it takes roughly 25 minutes to 1 hour. From the city centre, the fastest route is via Tiergarten and Ernst-Reuter-Platz to the A115. The B1 junction then takes you directly to Wannsee. When you arrive, you will find a variety of parking facilities, depending on where, exactly, you want to go. If you are drawn directly to Wannsee’s sandy beach, use the free parking spaces at the Wannsee lido. Nearby, you will also find parking spaces at P+R Wannsee. If you want to visit Peacock Island, first take the B1 and then the Nikolskoer Weg, where you will find a forest car park that’s only around 300 meters from the Peacock Island pier. You can also park in the Spanish Allee, just around the corner from Nikolassee.
