Getting Started

Who can use SHARE NOW?

Pretty much anyone who can legally drive can use SHARE NOW. To register, you need to fulfill the following requirements:

✓ You should be at least 18 years old
✓ You possess a valid driver's licence suitable for driving cars
✓ Your driver's licence should have been valid for at least 1 year
✓ You possess a good driving record with no alcohol- or drug-related violations
✓ You possess a valid email address
✓ You possess a smartphone (iOS or Android)

Easy as that.

What driver's licences do you accept?

Driver’s license holders from British Columbia need to request for their driving record to be forwarded to us via email. This can be done for free online at www.icbc.com/drivingrecord.

If you hold a Probationary License, you will be required to comply with any additional restrictions imposed by your government agency.

In Quebec, a Restricted License is issued if a driver has excess demerit points or an alcohol-related conviction. Restricted Licenses only allow the license holder to drive for “livelihood” reasons. Unfortunately, we can never accept a Restricted License in Quebec.

Do you accept international driver's licenses?

Yes, we do. If you have an international driving license, simply email us the following documents for validation:

  • A copy of the front and back of your driving license
  • A copy of your driving record
  • A certified translation of your documents (if your documents are not in English)

Not sure how to obtain your driving record? Depending on your country of residence, here's how you can obtain your driving record.

How do I upload my driver's license?

Simply upload your driver's license in the SHARE NOW app – no need to visit a rental office. You'll also be asked to upload a selfie of yourself, so we can verify it really is you.

Validation typically takes less than 3 working days. To ensure your driver's license will be accepted, please make sure you upload clearly legible full colour photos of the front and back of your driver's license. Your license should be lying on a flat surface.

What is a magic PIN?

The magic PIN is your key to the all SHARE NOW cars. When you first register, you need to set your personal 4-digit magic PIN.

Basically, you need to enter this PIN in the SHARE NOW app each time you want to unlock a car.

It's like magic. Easy as that.

Is the SHARE NOW app supported on my smartphone?

The SHARE NOW app is available for iOS (Version 10 or newer) and Android (Version 6.0 or newer). If you experience issues with the SHARE NOW app on your smartphone, please try updating to the latest app version.

What are these scary Android app permissions the SHARE NOW app is asking for?

After you download and open the SHARE NOW app, your Android mobile device will ask you for "permissions". Permissions are special privileges that apps must ask for if they want to access data or functions on your phone. For example, if you'd like to find a car near you, the SHARE NOW app will ask for permission to see your exact location. Some apps ask for more permissions than necessary – not cool. We ask for the bare necessities so that the SHARE NOW app will work well for you.

To improve GPS location quality, so that your location is as precise as possible on the map:
android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION
android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION
android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE

To secure your login in the SHARE NOW app:
android.permission.AUTHENTICATE_ACCOUNTS maxSdkVersion=22
android.permission.GET_ACCOUNTS maxSdkVersion=22
android.permission.MANAGE_ACCOUNTS maxSdkVersion=22
android.permission.USE_CREDENTIALS maxSdkVersion=22

Internet access – necessary for displaying available cars:
android.permission.INTERNET

To support in-app driver's licence validation:
android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE maxSdkVersion=22
android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE

To support push messaging for the radar feature:
android.permission.VIBRATE
android.permission.WAKE_LOCK
android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE
android.permission.RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED
android.permission.WRITE_SETTINGS
android.permission.ACCESS_WIFI_STATE
android.permission.ACCESS_DOWNLOAD_MANAGER

To enable fingerprint authentication (instead of your magic PIN) to unlock cars:
android.permission.USE_FINGERPRINT

For Google Maps and Google Cloud Messaging:
com.google.android.providers.gsf.permission.READ_GSERVICES
