Getting around Amsterdam

Public transport in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is known for its vibrant art museums, beautiful historical buildings, and iconic canals making it a must-visit destination. The city is easily navigable by foot, bike, or public transport, which is a convenient way to explore the surrounding areas. Whether you're looking to soak up the culture, indulge in delicious food and drink, or simply admire the beautiful scenery, Amsterdam has it all.

Bikes

What would Amsterdam be without its thousands of cyclists? Biking is a very popular option in the Dutch capital and for good reason. It's a healthy and eco-friendly way to get around the city. There are several ways to explore the city by bike, with bike rentals, which usually can be done via an app. Of course, biking in a big city with lots of traffic isn't for the faint of heart. Locals typically have a low tolerance for slow tourists who aren't aware of traffic rules as they go about their day. Bike theft is also very common, and not something anyone wants to deal with during holidays!

Buses

If you need to get around Amsterdam, the bus network is a great option. It covers all the neighbourhoods, as well as the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and beyond. For instance, if you're going to the beach in Zandvoort, taking the bus is a great option. You can choose from several bus companies, such as GVB, Connexxion (R-Net), and EBS, with many routes going to and from Amsterdam Central Station. You can buy single-journey tickets, but it's a good idea to consider getting 24-, 48-, 72-, or 96-hour tickets, which are valid on GVB services. Please be aware that buying tickets on any GVB bus is no longer possible. You can pay by debit/credit card, or use your public transport chip card. Of course, buses are prone to delays. So, fully depending on the bus network is not always ideal if you are short on time.

Underground lines

If you're planning to use public transport to get around Amsterdam, the metro is a reliable and efficient option. With five lines and 59 stops, it connects Amsterdam and neighbouring municipalities like Diemen, Amstelveen, and Ouder-Amstel. The metro runs daily from 6 AM to 12.30 AM, but keep in mind that if you plan on staying out late, you might need to consider other options. Trains run approximately every 10 minutes, so you won't have to wait long to catch a ride. And of course, Amsterdam wouldn't be complete without a rule for bikes, so be aware of the peak times when bicycles are prohibited: Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 and 16:00 to 18:30, so plan your journey accordingly.
