The Château Tour

The famous Château de Versailles

Time: 1.5 hours | Distance: 30 km
Start: Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris | End: Palace of Versailles
Best for Home Area(s): Paris

The famous Château de Versailles, the principal place of King Louis XIV, may only be 25 km outside of Paris, but the palace and its surrounding gardens will make you feel like you are in a whole other world.

The route runs 30km from the centre of Paris, including a detour through the Forêt domaniale de Meudon, making this a perfect day trip. The state forest covers nearly 1,100 hectares, spread over five communes (Meudon, Clamart, Chaville, Vélizy and Viroflay), and is home to a variety of wildlife. You can also take in the Paris Observatory along this driving route, which itself is surrounded by impressive gardens. We recommend stopping for a picnic overlooking the iconic cross pool at the Château de Versailles, or better, pop in to see more than 60,000 artworks illustrating five centuries of French history. • Image: Palace of Versailles © Clark Van Der Beken / Unsplash

The rural village tour

From Crécy-la-Chapelle to Coulommiers

Time: 2 hours | Distance: 69 km
Start: Paris Center | End: Coulommiers
Best for Home Area(s): Paris

For our second scenic driving route that's within reach of the city of Paris, we're going on a rural village tour. The area is popular with cyclists and hikers, but it's also a lovely drive of almost 70 kilometres. You'll pass through several small villages in the French countryside, taking you on a journey through art, history and industry.

The route includes a stopover at Crécy-la-Chapelle, a charming little artists village in the Brie region. Some even call this the 'The Venice of the Brie region' due to its canals and the way they dissect the village. Back in the 9th and 10th centuries, this was a fortified village, and some of the stone walls and defence towers still stand today. As you continue east you'll reach your destination. The Coulommiers commune in the Seine-et-Marne is famous for its cheese, which is smaller but thicker than Brie - be sure to pick one up before heading back to the city. • Image: Cordes-sur-Ciel © Aurélia Dubois / Unsplash

The forest route

Montmorency Forest

Time: 1.5 hours | Distance: 25 km
Start: Paris | End: Montmorency Forest
Best for Home Area(s): Paris

If woodlands are more your thing, our third and final scenic driving route in France will be up your alley. A little over 25 kilometres north of Paris you'll find Montmorency Forest. This vast chestnut grove is packed with historic sites, belvederes, and remarkable trees.

The Montmorency is the largest forest in Val-d'Oise, and has got that perfect combination of hilly areas and greenery that lend themselves to truly beautiful driving routes. Around 70% of the forest itself is chestnut trees, but oak is being reintroduced. As well as the natural and cultural riches and the winding roads, you'll have the chance to take in some of the magnificent landscapes of Chauvry valley. • Image: Col de Ceyssat, Orcines © Adrien Brun / Unsplash
