Tram

Electric trams in Milan are not just convenient transports to get around the city centre. They also have a historical and cultural value. Once on board, just imagine peeking out of the window and crossing the Milan of the late 19th century. The tram network has been running in the Lombard capital since 1876. It currently has 17 active lines with modern vehicles but with retro charm. Obviously, these vehicles are not always comfortable. You also have to take into account that strikes or traffic restrictions might happen.

Underground lines

The metro in Milan is a reliable and efficient mobility solution, with trains running every few minutes during peak hours. It has four lines: M1 red, M2 green, M3 yellow, and M5 lilac.
A pretty standard list of current complaints includes: it’s too crowded, claustrophobic, and dirty. But of course, the same happens in any major European capital. The system can be prone to delays and closures, especially on weekends and during maintenance work. You also have to keep in mind that the service generally operates from 5:30 AM to midnight, and there are no night runs.

The service is also available at night, from 2 AM to 5 AM only from Friday to Saturday in the following areas: Valtellina-Stelvio, Milton-Pagano, Sturzo-Como, Piazza XXIV Maggio, Umbria-Tito Livio, Umbria-XXII Marzo, Castelbarco-Tantardini and Ripamonti-Pietrasanta. If you want to travel around Milan by bus, you only have to get a ticket and pay attention to the time restrictions.

Taxi

Taking a taxi is a convenient solution especially if you are in a hurry. If you need a taxi for a spontaneous trip, you have to reach one of the areas dedicated to taxis, available in the city center or close to the railway stations. Alternatively, you can pre-book a ride using online services such as the one offered by Free2move, also available via the app. Taxis are efficient transports in a city like Milan, but out of all available options, they are also the most expensive. Do not underestimate the possible surcharges depending on the time of day.
