How to get around Rome

Public transportation in Rome

Whether for leisure or business, anyone travelling to Rome will discover a city on the move, where ancient streets and archaeological beauties coexist with the frenetic pace of daily mobility.

Among Limited Traffic Zones and parking meters, driving your own car is not always the most convenient and cheapest way to get around the city. In this guide, you will find a detailed overview of alternative modes of transportation so you can choose which is the best one to suit your needs.

Underground lines

Rome has 3 metro lines: Line A (Anagnina-Battistini), Line B (Laurentina-Rebibbia), and Line C (Pantano-San Giovanni), as shown on the ATAC official map. Rome's metro allows easy access to the most touristic areas of the city. For example: if you want to visit the Colosseum, you'll find the nearest stop on line C, while the Trevi Fountain is easily accessible from the Barberini stop on line A. As in all European Capitals, the metro in Rome is very crowded. In addition, the scheduling is limited. The underground lines operate from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM (Monday-Thursday) and from 5:30 AM to 1:30 AM the next day (Friday-Saturday).

Buses and trams

Unlike the metro lines, the bus and tram service has much more widespread coverage throughout the municipality. In addition, the service managed by the local public company ATAC is available 24/7, thanks to dedicated lines for the night. These night buses are marked with the letter N. If you choose to get around Rome by bus and tram, keep in mind that Rome is a very busy city and expect frequent delays in the planned schedule due to traffic congestion or strikes.

Bike sharing and electric scooters

The Eternal City is also full of mobility services such as bike sharing and electric scooters. The two-wheel offer is growing rapidly in the city center. Bikes and scooters can be easily booked via apps or websites. This solution is ideal for covering short urban distances, often within the same neighbourhood. If you are traveling with relatives or friends, you may need a more spacious vehicle that can offer more safety and comfort for longer trips.
