This city boasts an ancient history. Indeed it was chosen as a summer residence by Teodolinda, queen of Lombards. The Dome hosts the Iron Crown that adorned the heads of emperors throughout Europe. The park covers 70,000 hectares with forests, valleys and lakes between the Valbrembana and Valseriana. In this area, there is plenty of water. 8. Vittoriale degli italiani

Distance from Milan: about 130 km

In 1921 Gabriele d'Annunzio, famous italian writer, fell in love with a villa, located in Gardone Riviera. Soon he made it his residence and commissioned an extensive renovation that was completed only in 1938. The Vate, as D'Annunzio was named, wanted to make it his own mausoleum. And indeed, the Vittoriale, with its open-air theatre and sumptuous interiors, honours the inimitable life (vivere inimitabile) of its owner.

9. Sirmione and Lake Garda

Distance from Milan: about 135 km

Sirmione is one of the pearls of Lake Garda. The Scaliger Castle with its imposing towers will welcome you in a fairytale atmosphere. This town was appreciated since ancient times, as prove the ruins of a sumptuous Roman villa, owned, according to tradition, by the Latin poet Catullus. To appreciate Sirmione even more, go on a boat tour on the Garda lake at sunset.
