Chiemsee

Castles | Boat trips | Excursions with the family

Do you need a timeout? Would you like to escape the hustle and bustle of Munich? How about a short trip to the ‘Bavarian sea’, the Chiemsee? Southeast of Munich, nestled in the foothills of the Alps, it’s one of the most popular recreational areas in the Munich area. No wonder, since with almost 80 square kilometres, the Chiemsee is Bavaria’s biggest lake and ranks among the top three in Germany. Thanks to car-sharing in Munich, even the journey to your short break will already be relaxing.

Tips for activities at Chiemsee

Watersports play a big role at Chiemsee, especially in summer. Swimming and fishing are just as popular here as leisurely sailing or sporting activities like surfing and stand-up paddle boarding. If you prefer to stay on land, you can explore the idyllic shores by bike on the Chiemsee bike path or go hiking. The Herreninsel island, also known as Herrenchiemsee, can be reached all year round from Prien and Gstadt ports. In the summer months, the Chiemsee boat trip brings you from Bernau, Chieming, and Seebruck over to the idyllic island. Upon arrival, one of the absolute highlights of the island awaits, namely the magnificent ‘Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee’. It was built in 1878, based on the famous Palace of Versailles. You can get there by foot or ride in a horse-drawn carriage. The somewhat smaller Fraueninsel island can be reached from the Herreninsel, as well as from the towns of Gstadt and Prien. The Frauenwörth monastery especially characterizes the charm of the Fraueninsel and is a well-known place of pilgrimage. From a culinary perspective, Chiemsee also offers something for every taste. In summer, beach bars and beer gardens invite guests to relax and enjoy themselves.

Getting from Munich to Chiemsee and parking facilities

By car, it’s about 90 kilometres (55 miles) to Chiemsee. Depending on the route, it takes around one hour. The fastest way is to go there directly via A8 motorway. If you prefer a more leisurely drive, you can reach Chiemsee via the B304 main road. Upon arrival, you will find a number of parking facilities in Gstadt near the Seeplatz square. If you are more attracted to Prien, you can park there on the Harrasser Straße or Osternacher Straße. Covered parking is available in the P3 and P4 multi-storey car parks in Bernacher Straße.
